So you're thinking about building or contracting your own home! First let’s define what "contracting" is.
Contracting is the process of co-ordinating the efforts of skilled tradesmen and material in an efficient manner. In other words if you have some organizational skills you can do this. It isn't necessary to be able to swing a hammer or use a skill saw to actually contract or build your own home. You just need information and a step-by-step guide. Women can build too!
Here are some terrific reasons why you should contract your own home!
You will Save Money!!!
Here is a list that will give you an idea or how much you can save.
• "Sweat Equity" - your own labour 6-10% - One of the easiest and most rewarding ways of saving money during the construction of your home is by doing every small project you can find, that you are capable of doing. This will save you money and get you involved in the project.
• Materials 4-5%
• Contractor's Mark-up 15-20% - Contractors may charge you a "mark-up" fee over and above the construction cost. Say you were building a house that cost approximately $200,000, you could be charged anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 extra for the cost of that home.

• The total savings may be as much as 35% & More!!
You can choose your own products - shop & compare!
The products you find today are endless, but you have the final say on which products actually go into your home. You can determine what you want in your home. You can pick out hardwood & ceramic tiles. You pick the colors you want for your walls.
Go to your local home improvement center and check these things out. You can pick out what windows you would like. Did you know there are several different kinds, casement, awning, sliders, etc.? While you are there you can check out the light fixtures and determining which ones would be the best for your style of home. There are so many things you can choose to do when you are building your own home. You will also be able to pick out your appliances, dishwasher, fridge, stove and microwave. My favourite part was the kitchen. Picking out the cupboards and the style that "I" loved! I could do all this before I spent any money.
Check the flyers and newspaper inserts for specials and coupons.

You can choose your location including the lot!
When you build your first house it will be exciting to drive around and look at the different lots and know that you can have exactly what you want.
Ask yourself a few questions:
• Do you want to face north or south, east or west?
• Do you want the sun in the living room in the evening or do you want a bright kitchen in the morning. This is the fun part and it's just the beginning.
• Are you going to be close to the schools, the bus, & shopping malls (very important)!
Learn a new trade - you are never too old to learn
You may enjoy this so much you might decide to become a "Project Manager" and help other people build their own home. You may have the ability to do something different here so why not now. You could volunteer to learn it. You can go to other job sites and ask questions.
Why not volunteer for an organization called "Habitat for Humanity"? They take volunteers to help build homes for the less fortunate. You'll learn some skills and be helping someone else out in the meantime.
In conclusion; Building or Contracting your own home is a possibility and it would be worth your while to get more information on the subject. You can find this information on the web, libraries and magazines.
